Summer Academic Programs

Will Emmons

Will Emmons participates in Duke and Cambridge study programs

Lots of kids are attending band or athletic camps this summer. Our son, Will Emmons, is having a somewhat different summer vacation. Currently he is participating in a two-week Duke University TIP study in Italy. He will return home next week and after a few days of rest, he will depart for a three-week program at The Cambridge College in Cambridge, England.

Duke TIP takes students to Italy

For two weeks this summer, young scholars in grades 10, 11 and 12 will be immersed in an interdisciplinary adventure through the study of art and architecture against the backdrop of historical sties of cultural importance. Beginning in Rome and travelling through Pompeii, Naples, Tuscany, and Florence, students will share an unforgettable experience in one of Europe's most culturally rich countries.

While in Rome, students are based at St. Stephen's International School, a spacious villa located near the Circus Maximus and Colosseum. After spending a week in Rome, students visit sunny Pompeii to study the archaeology of this ancient city. After studying the sites of the Bay of Naples, students travel through scenic Tuscany to Florence before returning to Rome.

The course focuses on Italian culture in four major periods: Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque. Students visit the ruins of Pompeii, the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, The Forum, Colosseum, palaces of the emperors, churches, and the Pantheon in Rome. After visiting Orvieto and its medieval cathedral , students go to Florence where they experience the incomparable Renaissance works in the Uffizi and Accademia galleries, the Duomo, the churches, and other unforgettable sites. Returning to Rome, students visit the Vatican and Sistine Chapel.

Duke TIP in Italy is a special international study opportunity made available to academically talented youngsters through Duke TIP, the Duke University Talent Identification Program. This is one of four international field study opportunities offered by Duke TIP. Duke TIP's International Programs allow bright students to learn about other cultures through instruction, travel, and interaction with young people from all parts of the world. In 2003, international study opportunities are also available in Costa Rica, Greece, and France.

Students who apply to Duke TIP's International Programs complete an application that includes their transcripts, standardized test scores, an essay, and a school recommendation form. Students invited to participate in Duke TIP's summer programs achieve scores comparable to college bound high school seniors on college entrance exams.

In addition to the International Programs, Duke TIP offers five other summer study programs including the Center for Summer Studies, the Academy for Summer Studies, the PreCollege Program, the Leadership Institute, and Domestic Field Studies. Domestic summer residential program sites include: Duke University in Durham, NC; the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, NC; the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS; Davidson College in Davidson, NC; and Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Last summer, over 2,300 students from 42 states and 10 foreign countries attended Duke TIP summer programs.

Duke TIP is a nonprofit, educational organization designed to identify and develop academic talent. Since 1980, more than one million students from all parts of the world have taken part in a Duke TIP program. The program receives support from student fees and donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. Parents and students interested in further information about Duke TIP and its programs should contact the Duke University TIP office.

Cambridge College Program broadens knowledge

This coming summer, Will Emmons of Model Lab High School will attend The Cambridge College Programme for three weeks in Cambridge, England. The Programme, which was founded 17 years ago, was developed to give American teenagers the opportunity to experience the sights and culture of England through courses taught by British teachers associated with the University of Cambridge, and day trips to many places in England. Emmons will fly to London and then travel to Cambridge. He will stay in one of several of the University colleges along with approximately seven other students of the same age and interests and be supervised by a University student, who will live in the college with them.

The courses Emmons has chosen to study are political theory, Shakespeare and cultural history . All students will take a third course entitled "British Cultural History: Faith and Power, Learning and Leisure" which will consist of lectures on various subjects concerning Britian, and field trips to such places as Ely Cathedral , Stonehenge, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwick Castle, Bath , the Tower of London, the British Museum, Buckingham Palace, and many other sites and museums in London. The students will also see two plays in London's West End – The Lion King at the Lyceum, and Henrik Ibsen's drama Brand, starring Oscar-nominated actor Ralph Fienees, at the Haymarket – as well as a Shakespearean play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Richard III. And in the evenings, Emmons will join other students in a large variety of activities, which will include many sports, plays, movies, theme parties and more.

Most students participate in the programme to broaden their knowledge and strengthen their skills rather than to gain academic credits. Each student receives an evaluation of performance for classwork, including detailed comments by their instructor, a syllabus of each course, and a certificate of attendance. Many students include these in their applications to colleges and universities, and many high schools and colleges give credit to students on the basis of these reports.
