National Student Leadership Conference
In July 2002 William Emmons attended an invitational student
leadership program at American University in Washington DC The program, sponsored by the National Student Leadership Conference, is an extraordinary leadership program for
outstanding high school students. Student scholars are selected to participate from across the United States and more than 35 different countries based upon
academic excellence, extracurricular involvement and leadership potential. Each student is recommended and nominated by his/her high school.
The program William attended is the NSLC on International Diplomacy. During this 11-day leadership development program, William addressed
significant domestic and international issues such as how to handle international human rights violations, when to deploy UN peace keeping forces, and how to
draft international legislation. Students also attended special briefings from national and world leaders including several visits to foreign embassies to hear from Ambassadors about the policies of
different nations as well as a special briefing at the State Department.

I am sure you share our philosophy that students become more effective leaders by developing their ability to think, analyze and effectively communicate. Throughout the Program, William participated
in various leadership development activities and simulations. In our United Nations Simulation, students assumed the role of United Nations Diplomats where they negotiated, drafted and debated
UN resolutions and international policy from their nation's perspective. Students also developed and honed their skills in special workshops and classes including international law, negotiation, and
diplomacy.
Through participation in this extraordinary program, students develop a sense of independence and
responsibility, and leave with a true feeling of accomplishment and confidence in their ability to handle the challenges that lie ahead. William is an excellent student who has demonstrated maturity,
dedication and an ability to work well with a diverse group of students. William Emmons is certainly one of our nation's most promising young leaders.
